WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT ASSISTANT – FM2068

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

  • A Bachelor’s degree in ecology, nature conservation, wildlife management, zoology or a related subject is desirable but not essential
  • Proven record of experience with field work and the ability to use heavy machinery and conduct maintenance work is essential.
  • In this regard, the post-holder must have:
  • At least 1 year experience in field work related to game management, fence maintenance and the use of herbicides.
  • At least 1 year experience working with a variety of agricultural and earth moving equipment (chainsaw, tractor, pumps, TLB etc).
  • Experience in leading small teams and managing workplans.

 SKILLS & ABILITIES REQUIRED

  • Knowledge of local fauna, flora, and habitats, species identification skills.
  • Fluency in written and spoken Afrikaans and English.
  • A basic understanding of Xhosa is desirable.
  • Proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, Powerpoint).
  • Experience with technical research equipment (GPS, camera trap, telemetric tracking equipment etc.)
  • Firearm competency.
  • Must be physically fit.

  • Able to work independently in remote areas and spending periods of time in the field under challenging environmental conditions.
  • Responsible, working on own initiative with minimum supervision and staying on task.
  • Well-organised, punctual, adaptive, and forthcoming.
  • Working well with a multicultural team.

CORE RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO:

  • Cheetah monitoring.
  • Electrified fence status monitoring and maintenance.
  • Assistance with wildlife management actions such as wildlife monitoring, hunting, culling, game capture and the implementation of feeding protocols.
  • Assistance with the implementation of invasive alien plant control and habitat rehabilitation plans.
  • Help with the development and implementation of work plans in coordination with the Wildlife Ecologist and Operational Managers.
  • The post-holder will supervise the fence maintenance contract team in collaboration with his/her supervisor.
  • Ensure responsible management, maintenance and tracking of technical equipment.
