SMALLHOLDING DEVELOPMENT MANAGER

Durbanville / Cape Town Area – WC:  Extremely pretty and well-situated smallholding is seeking a smallholding manager to take it to the next stage of its journey toward being a sustainable entity. Note: This is a live-in role and preference to a single person or couple without children

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Matric advantageous
  • Valid driver’s licence
  • RSA ID or valid work permit
  • High level of literacy and strong IT skills
  • Excellent English and Afrikaans
  • Minimum 3 years’ experience in a similar role
  • Farming experience, ideally with exposure to permaculture
  • Requires stamina, flexibility, and meticulous attention to detail
  • Ability to understand and follow instructions
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills
  • Neat, tidy, presentable, professional, friendly, and helpful
  • Good cook, ideally with experience of jams, bottling and pickling
  • Enthusiastic and competent gardener, passionate about permaculture
  • Competent DIY (minor plumbing, electrical and woodwork)
  • Ideally has experience of marketing, sales, and product development
  • Works irregular hours including seasonal holidays, evenings, and weekends
  • Salary: R8,500pm – R15,000pm based on experience

JOB DESCRIPTION including but not limited to:

  • Manages Small Staff Complement
    • Co-ordinate 1 housekeeper and two gardener staff
    • Plan and organise daily, weekly, monthly work schedules
    • Manage petty cash, including weekly contract staff cash payments
    • Daily staff collection and drop off
    • Performs duties in cases of emergency or staff shortage
  • Oversee General Housekeeping (Execution role owned by highly competent domestic)
    • Oversee laundry, ironing, bed making, general cleaning
    • Conduct grocery shopping, procuring general supplies, inc. drinking water
    • Watering and maintenance of house plants
    • Catering for guests and events
    • Hosting for employees and visitors
    • Kitchen management and daily paleo cooking (produce lunch, dinner, and breakfast)
    • Deliver catering for small social events
    • Petcare, feeding, safety and egg collection
    • Prepare rooms for occasional guests, attending to needs
  • Office Management
    • Run errands for the CEO
    • Liaise with ICT Service providers
    • Manage inventory of ICT assets
    • Manage internet continuity
    • Oversee generator set up during load shedding
    • Manage inbound phones, taking messages and redirecting calls as required
    • Manage supplier, worker, and guest access to the property, first responder on gate access
    • Covid19 sanitisation and registration of guests
    • Manage supplies and stationery for small office
  • Smallholding Administration
    • Ensure occupational health and safety
    • Manage security, including setting of alarm systems, operating as key carrier
    • Manage administration, supplies, procurement, and stock
    • Oversee deliveries and returns, verifying delivery
    • Manage forms relating to smallholding administration
    • Track electrical consumption and drive for efficiencies
    • Innovate and implement solar and sustainable energy solutions, where affordable
    • Taking care of residence and animals in absence of the owner
  • Manages Routine Maintenance
    • Execute inhouse repairs and maintenance where able
    • Obtain quotations for supplies and maintenance work if required
    • Supervise builders and maintenance teams on small projects
    • Oversee and maintain water and irrigation infrastructure
  • Manage Entrepreneurial Ventures
    • Test business case for resin topped tables
    • Test business case for pottery and bead production
    • Test business case for mushroom production
    • Test business case for organic produce
    • Explore marketing, sales, product development and commercial case for profit
  • Oversee Rental Properties
    • Manage rental advertisements
    • Manage rental agent mandates and payments
    • Manage viewings and contracting for tenant cottages
    • Manages tenant maintenance requirements
  • Manage Landscaping and Venue Development (Role owned by excellent manager and 1 gardener)
    • Maintain and grow succulents and other plants for packaging and sale
    • Oversee kitchen garden
    • Plan and implement development of organic tunnel
    • Develop compositing processes that leverage neighbour horse manure
    • Develop self-sustaining natural swimming pool
    • Develop infrastructure for supporting guests
    • Develop community of participants that engage with smallholding activity
    • Production of marmalades, jams, almonds, including sanitised bottling processes
    • Management of trees including chainsaw and tool maintenance
