FARM MECHANIC & WORKSHOP MANAGER – FM1629

Harrismith Area – Free State: Our client is looking for a Farm Mechanic & Workshop Manager to join the team.

The successful candidate will oversee the maintenance and repair of a diverse range of vehicles and equipment on a farm.

Only candidates with the relevant experience will be considered.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

  • High school diploma or equivalent. Technical or vocational training in mechanics is a plus.
  • Relevant certifications in vehicle and equipment repair are advantageous.
  • Qualified diesel mechanic ideally
  • Proven experience as a mechanic with expertise in diagnosing and repairing various types of vehicles and equipment, including trucks, tractors, motorcycles, and implements.
  • Strong knowledge of diesel and gasoline engines, hydraulic systems, electrical systems, and vehicle diagnostics.
  • Previous experience in workshop management or supervisory role.
  • Ability to schedule and prioritize repairs and maintenance tasks to ensure minimal downtime for farm operations.
  • Inventory management skills to maintain necessary spare parts and tools.
  • Proficiency in using a wide range of tools and equipment for vehicle and equipment repair.
  • Welding and fabrication skills for custom modifications and repairs.
  • Knowledge of safety regulations and practices, ensuring a safe working environment for the team.
  • Ability to adhere to environmental and safety standards for the disposal of hazardous materials.
  • Strong problem-solving abilities to diagnose and troubleshoot complex mechanical issues quickly and efficiently.
  • Creative solutions for repairing older or custom-made farm equipment.
  • Leadership skills to manage a team of mechanics and assistants in the workshop.
  • Provide training and guidance to junior mechanics.
  • Maintain detailed records of maintenance and repairs for each piece of equipment.
  • Prepare reports on the workshop’s performance and expenses.
  • Effective communication skills to interact with farm staff, suppliers, and contractors.
  • Ability to explain complex technical issues to non-technical personnel.
  • Zulu or Sotho language skills will be an advantage
  • Efficiently manage time and resources to meet repair deadlines and prevent equipment downtime.
  • Physical fitness and stamina to perform manual tasks, including lifting heavy parts and equipment.
  • Willingness to work extended hours during peak seasons or in emergency repair situations.
  • A valid driver’s license with a clean driving record to operate farm vehicles for testing and transportation.
  • Strong problem-solving abilities to diagnose and troubleshoot complex mechanical issues quickly and efficiently.
  • Provide excellent customer service when interacting with farm personnel
  • Familiarity with various types and sizes of farm equipment, their specifications, and common maintenance issues.
  • Ability to manage the workshop’s budget effectively, controlling costs and expenses.
  • Adapt to changing farm equipment and technology, staying up-to-date with industry trends and advancements.
